2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC vs 2015 Mercedes-Benz ML 350
Serving Dublin, Columbus, Powell, Hilliard, Grove City, OH
Mercedes-Benz prides itself on offering a line-up of exciting SUVs. The 2016 GLC joins this family, which already includes the ML 350 SUV. With differences in size and style, both offer many of the same amenities, cutting-edge technologies, and real performance that you’d expect from Mercedes-Benz.
Completely new, the GLC is the successor to the GLK line. It is a compact crossover with a special build that allows it to maximize passenger space. Specially-designed rear doors, for instance, add to its ability to entertain adults on the back row. The ML 350 is part of the outgoing M-Class. Mercedes-Benz has streamlined its nomenclature, and the midsized luxury SUV line-up will now be referred to as GLE.
Performance
The ML 350 has a 3.5-liter V-6 engine. This powertrain delivers 302 horsepower plus 273 lb.ft. of torque. It earns 24 mpg highway*. The GLC 300 boasts a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It matches the ML 350 with 273 lb.ft. of torque thrust. The horsepower is an ample 241, ensuring ready power at the driver’ command. This turbo boosts fuel economy to 28 mpg highway*. Both powertrains have stop-start capability, reducing city fuel use.
While the ML 350 enjoys a seven-speed automatic, the new GLC has a nine-speed automatic with even more smooth-shifting capability. The nine-speed system includes Dynamic Select with five modes, including Sport and Sport-Plus settings. With an option for 4MATIC® all-wheel drive, both vehicles come standard with rear-wheel drivetrains. The all-new GLC offers the new Air Body Control suspension. This system works at all four corners, leveling the SUV for maximized handling and aerodynamics.
Appearance
Both offer elegant cabins with modern comforts and technology. High quality materials and craftsmanship are emphasized. As the newest model, the GLC is a newer design with a more natural elegance than its GLK predecessor. This brings it more in line with the expectations of a typical Mercedes-Benz owner. ML 350 and GLC standards include a power liftgate, dual zone climate control, and MB-Tex leatherette upholstery. The ML 350 has a standard 8-way power seat with seat-heaters while the GLC has a new 10-way power seat. The two SUVs offer the COMAND® interface with a 7-inch infotainment display and touchpad. Both have an 8-speaker sound system with HD Radio and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Both have split-folding rear seats that quickly expand cargo space when you need it, but the GLC 300 has added a power-fold capability.
Safety
The newer GLC has not yet been tested, but the ML 350 sailed through its testing, earning all five stars from the NHTSA. It earned a superior for its driver assistance systems from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Both models offer this important package, which adds steering assist and automatic braking to a long list of features. Drivers can expect warnings and some automated help when dealing with lane departures, forward collision situations, and blind spot dangers. The standard collision system can stop the car at speeds less than 30 mph when danger is detected. This includes recognizing dangers to pedestrians, an important part of the Mercedes-Benz system.
ATTENTION ASSIST®, standard on both the GLC and the ML 350, recognizes the signs of distracted or drowsy driving. This alerts the driver and helps reduce the chances of a collision due to inattention. PRESAFE® recognizes collision conditions and readies the cabin for impact. For after-crash assistance, the mbrace® system can automatically notify emergency responders after a collision.
